3rd and 4th grade students are becoming independent yet still LOVE to depend on their teacher for the extra nurture and encouragement needed to take the leap into becoming self-motivated scholars. They are starting to master their reading skills and read for understanding in the wonder-filled content areas! Students complete written and oral book reports in all genres, and read for pleasure. Other language arts activities build on the foundational writing skills they received in 2nd grade and focus on proper spelling, punctuation and grammar, skillful cursive, and expanding vocabulary. 3rd and 4th graders grow in their confidence in public speaking when they make presentations to their classmates through poetry recitation and Scripture memorization, our favorite! In the spring, many of them compete in our Annual Speech Meet competition to earn ribbons and certificates.
Group collaboration, group games, and individual work are creatively used to learn: numbers to 10,000, data analysis, measurement, money, fractions, time, geometry/area/perimeter/volume in 3rd grade. In fourth grade, students add to their mathematical understanding with decimals, operations of decimals, graphing and probability.
Fun applications of learning include: Classroom store, field trips to California history sites, buddy Fridays, community service card-making, and seasonal gardening.
