1st & 2nd Grade

Students in 1st and 2nd grades enjoy learning and practicing their reading skills. A strong phonics approach is used to teach the children the skills they need to become fluent readers. Our instructional materials are designed for student appeal and readability, building confidence and enthusiasm in reading. Twice-weekly reading groups are offered, led by volunteer parents.

In math class, students learn the basics of addition, subtraction and multiplication. Manipulatives and games are used to teach concepts of measurement, money, telling time, fractions and math facts.

Our language arts are focused on basic writing skills – sentence structure and punctuation, learning to write and illustrate stories. Spelling tests are given weekly.

A puppet unit in the Spring is always a class favorite! Students create puppets, write their own plays adapted from classic fairy tales, and perform for their classmates and other grades.

Bible time includes favorite Bible stories and reading about Christian heroes. Christian virtues and character traits are incorporated in all of our teaching. A weekly Bible verse is assigned for memory work.

Our 1st and 2nd graders also have classes in Science, Music, Art, P.E. and Computer Lab.
