Kindergarten takes a child from home to his/her first formalized school setting. The children have a big transition, many adjustments and much to accomplish in this first year. Our day consists of many routines, offering comfort and stability. Classroom and social interactions are talked about and playacted out to offer tools for real life situations. God is turned to in prayer for all our requests.
The phonics program is a large part of the Kindergarten curriculum. We begin each year with the introduction of individual letters, advancing to blending a consonant and a vowel and, finally, reading words. Each child is provided with small readers with which to practice his/her reading skills. It is not all paperwork. Often the students do not realize they are learning as they participate in daily games, art, play dough, shaving cream, movement or other such activities to reinforce the lesson.
The math program is much the same as phonics. Through the use of games, songs and activities, the children travel through numbers 1 – 100, time, money, addition, subtraction and story problems.
The day is not long enough to fit in all the many riches God’s world has to offer. We read stories, have Social Studies and Bible lessons. Science is a learning process full of observations through experiments. Art is prevalent throughout our week and subjects.
During the year there are many special, short term topics we study. These can include a Dr. Seuss week, spider unit, ant unit and an African unit.
My goal is to provide a safe, nurturing environment for each student where he/she learns of God’s love for him/her. I want each child to leave Kindergarten excited about learning.
